Overview:

Against the Grain Theatre is an award-winning Canadian opera company that presents classical music in innovative ways and in unusual venues. Our mandate is to create and introduce communities to outside-the-box opera experiences – while maintaining a commitment to artistic excellence.

Now in our 10th season, we are presenting 4 productions this year including a production of La Bohème which toured dive bars from Banff to Toronto and the Yukon and a new commission, Bound in April that brings together Handel’s timeless music with stories taken from current events. AtG also hosts monthly, standing-room-only, free opera pubs and we are taking part in an artist-in-residency program at National Sawdust in Brooklyn. To finish off the year, in collaboration with U of T, we host a summer intensive opera training program for young artists. We are a lean organization with a total annual budget of under $1 million. Our team consists of the inspirational Artistic Director, a super-charged Executive Director, the passionate Arts Collective and an engaged Board of Directors.

About Against the Grain Theatre

Since 2010, Against the Grain Theatre has been making waves in Canada’s classical music scene. Offering everything from Mozart, Handel, Schubert and Puccini to Britten, Messiaen, Janáček and Kurtág, we have made it our mandate to exhibit fresh, daring re-interpretations of classical repertoire. We perform in nontraditional spaces — courtyards, bars, Victorian mansions, wedding halls — and with scaled-back accompaniment, such as a string quartet or piano, to bring out the full force of operatic singing in close quarters. The result? A thrilling, intimate, and unforgettable experience shared between our artists and audiences. Come see for yourself.

Against the Grain Theatre is a proud member of the Toronto Alliance for the Performing ArtsOpera Volunteers International, and Indie Opera T.O.

Against the Grain Theatre is proud to have been the inaugural participant in the Canadian Opera Company’s company-in-residence program.
