AtG's Strategic Plan

The roadmap of our values guiding our next three seasons.

In 2021-22, we collaborated with key AtG stakeholders to develop a three-year plan that reflects and supports the growth we wish to see in our outside-the-box organization.

Vision, Mission & Values

Against the Grain Theatre evolves the nature and perception of what opera and vocal works can be.

Against the Grain Theatre creates genre-bending, boundary-breaking operatic and vocal works by weaving together memorable artistic experiences with diverse storytelling.

We employ a holistic, people-centred approach, prioritizing the well-being of those we engage with.

We commit to continuously fostering brave spaces that support all people in engaging fully, in particular, those whose voices have been historically excluded.

We create space and eliminate barriers for all to participate in our initiatives.

We prioritize a collaborative organizational culture, and are a partner of choice for artists, arts organizations, and arts allies in our community.

Strategic Priorities

Foster a culture of belonging, communication, and collaboration with all stakeholders.

We lead with dignity and respect for all individuals we connect with—period. We want AtG spaces to inspire everyone to be their authentic selves and to feel that they are a part of the AtG fam.

Develop and support the next generation of creators, performers, arts administrators, and audiences through formal and informal education and mentorship initiatives.

Education is a priority for us over the next few years. This includes bringing back initiatives such as The National Opera Intensive, as well as creating new educational programming in partnership with the opera outreach collective Opera InReach.

Showcase new vocal works and reimagined traditional opera, embracing the use of digital strategies and innovative technologies while integrating live performance.

We always try to think outside the box when it comes to presenting opera and vocal works, and our exploration of digital works throughout the pandemic has given us new tricks and tools to experiment with.

Embrace long-term planning to achieve financial sustainability and build strong ongoing relationships with donors and funders.

Community is key to us, and that means we prioritize building relationships with our supporters. Whether it be a zoom catch-up or an AtG event, we to make sure that we meaningfully connect with those who help us grow!

Support AtG
Make opera and vocal works more accessible and affordable for diverse audiences.

At Against the Grain Theatre, we strive to keep our productions as accessible as possible. This includes offering tickets free of charge and quality digital programming that can be enjoyed by audiences across Canada and beyond.

Opera Pub, one of our staple projects, presents opera in a more casual setting, where audience members are encouraged to let loose and get rowdy. For our 2022/2023 season, we will be presenting Opera Pub in 3 cities across Canada: Vancouver, Edmonton, and Toronto.

Support Experimental Opera

To keep making rule-bending, boundary-breaking opera, we rely on support from our audience. Please consider making a donation to our organization so we can keep creating outside-the-box opera for you.
